Rev. George V. Jackovic

The Rev. George V. Jackovic, 95, entered into eternal rest Thursday, October 1, 2015, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

He was born May 3, 1920, in Canonsburg, a son of George and Marie Jackovic. During his youth, Father Jackovic attended elementary school at Third Ward in Canonsburg and graduated from Canonsburg High School. On June 16, 1946, in Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, he was ordained by Bishop Hugh C. Boyle as a Roman Catholic priest. Father Jackovic was incardinated into the Diocese of Pittsburgh June 16, 1946. He was assigned as parochial vicar at Saint Joachim Parish in Pittsburgh from 1946 to 1951, at Saint Mark Parish in McKees Rocks from 1951 to 1953, at Sacred Heart Mission Parish in Nemacolin, Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Carmichaels and Saint Mary Mission Parish in Nemacolin from 1953 to 1958 and at Immaculate Conception Parish in Pittsburgh from 1958 to 1966. He then served as Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Creighton from 1966 to 1994.

Father Jackovic was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 3291, Canonsburg, and Bishop Boyle Assembly 922. He was also a member of Priest's Choir and chaplain of St. Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus Council 3291, Canonsburg, and Catholic Daughters of America. After a long and faithful career spanning nearly five decades, he retired from service February 7, 1994.

Surviving are a cousin, Dennis (Johanna) Trylko of McMurray, and other cousins. Father Jackovic was the last of his immediate family. Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Albert Jackovic.

Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, with Bishop David A. Zubik as celebrant. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the church, which will be attended by Knights of Columbus Council 3291 and Bishop Boyle Assembly 922. Arrangements are in the care of Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, Canonsburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, My Father's House, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg.

In memoriam of Edgar L. Kane, Jan. 21, 1943 - Nov. 21, 2012

Surrounded by his loving family, Edgar L. Kane, 69, of Roscoe, passed away after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012. A son of the late Benjamin and Donna Mills Kane, he was born Jan. 21, 1943, in Waynesburg.

He retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Allenport Plant, where he worked as an electrician. Edgar was a member of Monongahela Valley Lodge No. 461 of the Free & Accepted Masons and enjoyed talking on his ham radio, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren. Left to cherish the many memories of Edgar are his wife, Linda Lutes Kane, of Roscoe; daughters, Wendy Kane Miller and husband, Jim, of California, Pa., and Lanie Kane Bilitski and husband, Brad, of Roscoe; and his grandchildren, Brooke and Benjamin Bilitski and Eilish Miller.

A memorial service honoring Edgar will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church in Roscoe. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc., 1008 Furlong Avenue, Roscoe. The family would also like to thank Hospice Care of Washington Hospital for the outstanding care and support they provided in their time of need.

The memorial service for Ed will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Roscoe.

Virginia resident formerly of Nemacolin Marie H. Kennedy, 92, of Manassas, Va., formerly of Nemacolin, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2001, in Annaburg Manor Nursing Home, Manassas.

She was born February 8, 1909, in Connellsville, a daughter of Calvin C. and Janet McInnes Jaynes.

Mrs. Kennedy worked as a resident manager at Corlaine Gardens Apartments in Fall Church, Va., from 1961 until her retirement in 1993. Prior to that, she worked as a waitress.

During World War II, she worked as a "Rosie riveter" in military aircraft assembly plants.

Mrs. Kennedy was Presbyterian.

Surviving are a son, Bernard G. Kennedy of Surprise, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Michael Kennedy, Pamela Burckette, Tamara Linski and Kimberly LaMoth; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, Leo Calvin "Skippy" Kennedy, who died in infancy; two brothers, Sifton and Ronald Jaynes; and two sisters, Anna Connor and Janet Jaynes.

Member of Our Lady of Consolation Church

Anna M. Korcheck, 89, of Nemacolin, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 1995, in her home.

She was born May 8, 1906, in Etna, a daughter of Andrew and Anna Opest.

Mrs. Korcheck had lived in Nemacolin for 65 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Nemacolin and was a member of the Rosary Society / Christian Mothers of the church. Her husband, Michael Korcheck, died in 1973.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen J. Korcheck of Brandenton, Fla., and Robert A. Korcheck of Nemacolin; two brothers, Albert Opest of McClellandtown and Andrew Opest of Carmichaels; one sister, Pauline Jaslowski of Uniontown; three grandchildren, Michael Korcheck, Stephanie Korcheck and Robert A. Korcheck II; and three great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to her husband, are one son, Michael Korcheck; and two sisters, Mary Myers and Helen Lengal.

Former high school teammates and boyhood companions will serve as pallbearers for Mike Korcheck of Nemacolin, short- stop of the Fort Worth, Texas League team, who died Friday from a kidney ailment.

His funeral will be held tomorrow morning at Our Lady of Consolation Church in Nemacolin.

His former teammates were James Bailey, Rudy Tarlosky, Joseph Lorinchack, Thomas Colbert, Thomas Cerqueria and George Holupka.

The Brooklyn Dodgers, parent team for the Fort Worth club, will also be officially represented.


Helen Kormanik

Helen Kormanik, 87, of Dublin, Ohio, formerly of Nemacolin, Pa., died Monday, July 19, 2004, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Oliver, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Kormanik; four brothers, Andrew, Frank and two that died in infancy; and her parents, Andrew and Catherine Yanechko Orlosky.

She was a graduate of Carmichaels High School and of St. Francis School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1939.

Helen was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Her unit was the 51st Station Hospital, II Armored Division, 3rd Army. She was the nurse for Buckeye Coal Company, of Nemacolin, Pa., from 1945 to 1955, the Director of Nursing for The Curry Home in Waynesburg, Pa., from 1961 to 1974, then worked for Western State School & Hospital as a nursing supervisor until 1984.

She was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Church, Nemacolin, Pa., where she was a member of the Rosary Society and a member of the Catholic Daughters of Greene County.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel A. Kormanik of Newtown, Conn., and John D. Kormanik of Dublin, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Mary F. Ringer of Dublin, Ohio (formerly of Nemacolin, Pa.,) Mrs. Louise Simkovic of Carmichaels, Pa., and Mrs. Marguerite Urbany of Washington, Pa.; one brother, Edward Orlosky of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Friends will be received in the PAUL M. LESAKO FUNERAL HOME INC, 204 Dowlin Ave., Carmichaels, Pa., on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday, where a prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Hugh Church in Carmichaels at 10:15 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. John Bauer as Celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Crucible, Pa. A Parish Wake Service will be held on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

William Kotch

William Kotch, 69, died Sunday at his home in Nemacolin, Pa.

Mr. Kotch was retired from the Nemacolin Mine. He also worked for the Carmichaels and Jefferson, Pa. senior centers.

A World War II veteran, where he served as a military policeman during the Nuremberg Trials.

He was a founding member of the Nemacolin Volunteer Fire Department, a member of United Mine Workers of America, Nemacolin Local 6290, a volunteer scoutmaster for Edinburg Boy Scout troop 558, and a member of Cumberland American Legion Post No. 400 of Carmichaels, Pa.

Survivors include his wife, Edna (Hepler) whom he married Dec. 5 1953; sons, Guy (Dawn) of Cuyahoga Falls, Mark (Angie) of Beaver Falls, Pa., and Charles (Michelle) of Stow; daughters, Mrs. Jack (Cynthia) Rose of Carmichaels and Mrs. Alan (Emily) Trainor of Cuyahoga Falls; 15 grandchildren; one brother and two sisters.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Yoskovich Funeral Home, 300 S. Vine St., Carmichaels, Pa., where the Veneration of the Cross and Memory Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A Pomen service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday with funeral services starting at 1 p.m. at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Carmichaels. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.

Josephine M. Kozlowski, age 85, of Nemacolin died Thursday December 3, 2015 in Rolling Meadows Nursing Care, Waynesburg.

Josephine was born November 15, 1930 in Uniontown, the daughter of the late Michael and Maria Matey Simkovic Sr.

She is survived by 6 children, Joseph Kozlowski (Mary) of Carmichaels, John Kozlowski (Harriet) of Nemacolin, Vincent Kozlowski, Sr. (Billie) of Nemacolin, Debra Cox (John) of Carmichaels, Jerry Kozlowski (Anna) of Uniontown, Cindy Walters of Uniontown, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren, one brother, Andy Simkovic of Carmichaels, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, deceased are a son, Charles and a daughter, Donna Marie Kozlowski, 2 brothers, Joseph and Mike Simkovic, and 2 sisters, Ann Zdravecky and Velma Kesock, and a son-in-law, Clarence Walters.

Josephine was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Church, Nemacolin, and the Altar Rosary Society.

She loved looking after her family, cooking, canning, and crocheting.

Fred Krivoski

Fred Krivoski, 88, of North Canton, Ohio, passed away August 6, 2002 in Aultman Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Annabell, West Virginia on September 27, 1913, the eldest son of the late Mike and Lucy (Vignovich) Krivoski.

He was a long time resident of Nemacolin, Pa., and had lived in the North Canton area for the last 13 years.

He was a 44 year employee of the Buckeye Coal Company, serving as Chief Storekeeper and Purchasing Agent and an LTV retiree.

Fred is survived by his wife Louise (Kociolek), with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage on May 29, 2002; daughter and son-in-law Bonita and Vincent Andreani of North Canton, Ohio, daughter and son-in-law Vicki Krivoski and William (Bill) Smith of Oceanside, Calif.; three brothers Mitch and wife Jean Krivoski of Greensburg, Pa., Duke and wife Irene Krivoski of Princeton, Ky., Bill and wife Sophie Krivoski of Enon Valley, Pa.; one sister Daisy Toth of Yardley, Pa. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment was held at Greene County Memorial Park in Waynesburg, Pa.

The family plans a private memorial service to celebrate his life.

Pete Krivosky, 81, of Carmichaels, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2003, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.

He was born December 18, 1921, in York Run, Fayette County, a son of Mike and Mary Zaucha Krivosky.

Mr. Krivosky was a 1940 graduate of Cumberland Township High School and resided in Cumberland Township for most of his life.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Mr. Krivosky worked for 43 years at LTV Nemacolin Mine, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church of Carmichaels, United Mine Workers of America Local 6290 of Nemacolin, American Legion Post 423 of Masontown, Disabled American Veterans Post 123, Carmichaels Senior Center and Moose Lodge 819 of Carmichaels.

Mr. Krivosky also was a social member of John F. Kennedy Memorial Council of Knights of Columbus, Carmichaels.

On April 20, 1944, he married Sophie Popovich, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Rosemary Lewis of Clarion and Judi Shimrock of Vermillion, Ohio; six grandchildren, Michele Carroll, Michael Lewis, Danielle Hoebing, and Peter, Christian and Brandi Shimrock; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Sophia Angelini of Carmichaels; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Nick Krivosky; and two sisters, Mildred Kattalia and Anne Milak.

Charles Lasko

Charles Lasko He lived at 142 West Wood. He volunteered with the Canadian Air Force and then switched to US after it joined the war. He started as Corporal and ended as Lt. Colonel fighting in three wars. He had over 7 kills in European skies. You might remember a big boom over Nemacolin sometime in the 50s. That was him.

During World War II, Charles Lasko became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 7.5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, and retired in 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Frank E. Latsnic, 73, U.S. Army Veteran

Frank E. Latsnic, of Lorain, died Sunday December 30, 2001 at Grace Hospital (Amherst) following an illness of five months.

He was born March 21, 1928 in Mount Sterling, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain since 1949 coming from Pennsylvania.

A U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served as a sergeant and light weapons specialist.

Mr. Latsnic was employed as an electrician foreman in the maintenance division of the blast furnace department at U.S. Steel's Lorain Works. He retired in 1983 following 36 years of service.

An active parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church (Lorain), his hobbies included league bowling with the U.S. Steel Company Bowling League, fishing, and vegetable gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years: Ida A. Mannarelli, daughters: Maureen Negulescu and Cheryl Arroyo both of Avon Lake, a son: Edward, 8 grandchildren, one step granddaughter, his mother: Julia (nee Gorcheck) of Clarksville, Pennsylvania, his brother: John W. of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and sisters: Dolly Kuzlinski of Dry Tavern, Pennsylvania, Dolores "Dee" Rumancik of North Canton, Ohio, and Shirley Morris of Meadville, Pennsylvania along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Steve, an infant daughter, and a sister: Elsie Horvat in 1999.

Funeral services for the family were conducted Thursday in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Henkle, O.F.M. Conv., associate pastor of the church officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery where military honors were performed by officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans.

Funeral arrangements were under direction of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel- Lorain.

Julia G. Latsnic, 95 of Nemacolin, Pa., died at 1:45 P.M. on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at Lasosky's Personal Care Home, Clarksville. She was born February 2, 1911 in Miller Farm, Pa., a daughter of the late Steve and Julia Gorcheck. Mrs. Latsnic resided in Nemacolin for the past 73 years where she was a member of the Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, sewing, flower gardening and the company of her family. Her husband, Steve E. Latsnic, died September 28, 1984.

Surviving are a son, John W. Latsnic and his wife, Mary of Canonsburg, Pa.; three daughters, Dolly Kuzlinski and her husband, Stanley of Rices Landing, Pa., Dolores Rumancik and her husband, Joseph of North Canton, Ohio and Shirley Morris of Meadville, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, John Horvat, Jr., Susan Horvat Miciolek, Maureen Negulescu, Cheryl Sparino, Edward Latsnic, Linda Wright, Louann Cruz, Rudy Juracko, David Rumancik, Mark Rumancik, Chad Rumancik, Michelle Morris and Jason Morris; 21 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ralph B. Lewellen

Nemacolin man had spent 52 years in Covington, Ky.

Ralph B. Lewellen, 91, of Haney's Personal Care Home in Rices Landing, died at 4 p.m., Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. He was born August 12, 1906, in California, a son of Raymond V. and Lillian Gere Lewellen. On March 22, 1926, he married Mary E. Pitcock Lewellen who died March 17, 1996.

Mr. Lewellen spent his early years in Nemacolin working many jobs such as carpenter, motion picture projectionist and mechanic for Nemacolin Mine. In 1929 he left Greene County for Covington, Ky., where he worked as a guard for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Savannah which escorted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in 1945. In Kentucky, Mr. Lewellen was a member of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in Covington and the Masonic Lodge in Independence, Ky. In 1981 he returned to Greene County.

He is survived by one son, Kenneth E. Lewellen of Ryland Heights., Ky.; one grandson, Frank B. Lewellen of Boise, Ind.; one brother, Frank Lewellen of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Wilda Shaszar of Columbiana, Ohio; three nephews, Thomas Lewellen, Richard Pitcock and Allen Pitcock; and two nieces, Ruth Henderson and Clara Louise Pitcock. Services were Dec. 30 at Behm Funeral Home, Jefferson, Pa. Entombment was in Greene County Memorial Park Mausoleum, Jefferson.

Betty Jane Lipchinsky Hoist, 70, of Masontown, Pa., died Friday, March 19, 1999, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. She was born July 15, 1928, in Nemacolin, Pa., daughter of Michael Lipchinsky and Mary Regula Lipchinsky. She was a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Masontown, Pa., and The Confraternity of Christian Mothers, former Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America, and owner/operator of a beauty shop in Masontown for over 40 years.

Her husband, Stephen "Steve" Hoist, died in 1993. Also deceased are two sisters, Sophie Payson and Stella Borytsky, two brothers, Bernard and Walter Lipchinsky, and her parents. She is survived by three children: Stephen F. Hoist Jr. and his wife, Millie, of Point Marion, Pa., William Hoist and his wife, Terri, of Masontown, Pa., and Stephanie Hoist at home; five grandchildren: Jennifer Hoist, Amy Hoist, Stephen Hoist III, Thomas Hoist, and Joseph Hoist, great-grandson, Nicholas Gage Hoist; a brother, Joseph Lipchinsky of Michigan; and two sisters: Mrs. Edith Caligiuri of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. Marie Hatalla of Nemacolin, Pa.

Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC., 515 North Main St., Masontown, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, March 23, until 9:30 a.m. when a Blessing Service will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 10 a.m. in All Saints Catholic Church, Masontown, with Rev. Fr. James F. Bump as Celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Masontown. Visitation was also held Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Parish Wake Service in the Funeral Home today at 2 p.m. Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary today at 7 p.m.

Injured last Thursday when struck by a machine in the Nemacolin mine of the Buckeye Coal company, Charles Lapchinsky, aged 33 years, six months and 13 days, succumbed Saturday night, September 17, 1938, in the Uniontown hospital to a broken back and fractured right leg.

Lapchinsky, a well-known member of the United Mine Workers and of the Citizen's Club of Nemacolin, made a valiant battle for his life despite the grave injuries. He was caught by a cutting machine in the mine.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Anna Lapchinsky; three children, Betty, Richard and Marlene, at home; his mother, Mrs. Mary Lapchinsky, of Morgantown street, Uniontown, and the following brothers and sisters: John, of Oliver 1; Michael, Nemacolin; Mrs. Hattie Kudiba, Allison; Mrs. Nellie Bazonis, Uniontown, and Mrs. Catherine Nebraska, Uniontown.

Brief funeral rites will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at the home in House 219 at Nemacolin, followed by requiem high mass in the Nemacolin R.C. church, with Rev. Fr. Paul Buza, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery, at Hopwood, under the direction of George Yoney, of Masontown.

Age 86 years of 169 March Ave Nemacolin died Wednesday December 1, 1976 at 10:30 pm in the Uniontown Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Poland, Europe on November 14, 1890 and resided in this area for 49 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Consolation RC Church, Nemacolin. She was predeceased by her husband Michael Lipchinsky in 1959 and a sister, Stella Borytsky in 1971. Surviving are three sons, Joseph of Harbor Springs, Michigan; Bernard of Cleveland, Ohio; and Walter of Masontown; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Sophia) Payson, Uniontown, Pa., Mrs. Richard (Edith) Caliguiri, Pittsburgh, Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Hatalla, Nemacolin and Mrs. Stephen (Betty) Hoist, Masontown; twenty-one grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received in the Michael Lucas Funeral Home, Carmichaels, today from 7 to 9 p m and Saturday 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm and Sunday 12 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm and Monday when short services will be held at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Our Lady of Consolation RC Church with Rev Fr Francis Nazimek as celebrant.

Interment in St Joseph's Cemetery Hopwood, Pa. Rosary will be Sunday evening at 7:30 pm.

Walter Paul Lipchinsky, 66, of 44 River Ave., Masontown, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1992, in Veterans' Hospital, Oakland, Pittsburgh.

He was born April 7, 1926, in Grindstone, son of the late Mike and Mary Regula Lipchinsky. He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother; Sophie Payson, Stella Borytsky, Bernard Lipchinsky. He was a retired assistant mine superintendent from Buckeye Coal Company's Nemacolin Mine, World War II veteran, serving with the US Army, and an insurance salesman for American General Life.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Seginack Lipchinsky; two sons: Paul Lipchinsky of Masontown and Tom Lipchinsky of Uniontown; four grandchildren; brothers and sisters; Joseph Lipchinsky of Michigan, Mrs. Richard (Edith) Caligairi of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Hatalla of Nemacolin, and Mrs. Steve (Betty) Hoist of Masontown; nieces and nephews.

Anna L. Morofsky died Friday, Jan. 3, at the Yavapai Regional Medical Center. She was born May 2, 1906, at Sharon, Pa., to George and Johanna (Melcher) Vrabel.

She moved to Prescott from Nemacolin, Pa., 21 years ago. Mrs. Morofsky was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Legion of Mary and the Senior Adult Center.

A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Sacred Heart Church, 150 Fleury Ave. A vigil service was conducted Monday, Jan. 6, at Memory Chapel Mortuary, 131 Grove Ave. Father George A. Whedbee, C.M.F. was the celebrant.

Burial followed in Mt. View Cemetery in Prescott.

Army veteran served at Pearl Harbor

Joseph E. Morofsky, 91, of Nemacolin, died 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 1997, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg.

He was born April 30, 1906, in Gates, Fayette County, a son of Leon and Mary Bercheck Morofsky.

He was a retired miner from Nemacolin Mine and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was a former member of American Legion Post 400 at Carmichaels.

In 1972, he married Anna Block, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Morofsky of Fredricksburg, W.Va., and Richard Morofsky of Nemacolin; one grandson, R. Bryan Morofsky; and one sister, Mary Morofsky of McMurray.

Deceased are three sisters, Emma Gorcheck, Barbara Descaro and Helen Morofsky; one brother, Edward Morofsky; and one half sister, Vera Gaskey.

Morofsky, 73, former mine supervisor of the Buckeye Coal Co. of Nemacolin, Greene County, died yesterday morning (Sept. 9) at his home at 6224 Fifth Ave., Shadyside. Mr. Morofsky was employed by the Buckeye Coal Co. for forty years and is a former resident of Nemacolin. Surviving are his wife, Violet Shivinsky Morofsky; three daughters, Pearl, Marjorie and Jane Morofsky, all of Pittsburgh; one sister, Mrs. Emma Lysek, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; and one brother, Edward. Friends are being received at McCabe Bros., Inc., 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A requiem high mass for Mr. Morofsky will be offered Wednesday at 10 am in Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Marjorie J. Morofsky, 77, of Peters Township, died at 4:05 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2000, in Manor Care, McMurray.

Miss Morofsky was born September 5, 1923, in Nemacolin, a daughter of Joseph J. and Violet Shivinski Morofsky.

She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.

Two sisters, Pearl I. Morofsky and Eileen Jane Bruno, both of McMurray, survive.

At the request of the deceased there was no public visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, November 13, in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg, with the Rev. Alfred Cicola officiating. Interment followed in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray.

Pearl I. Morofsky, 79, of McMurray, died at 3:06 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2000, in Washington Hospital.

She was born October 22, 1921, in Leckrone, a daughter of Joseph J. and Violet Shivinski Morofsky.

Miss Morofsky was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.

She was a graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing in Pittsburgh and was employed as an industrial nurse with U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh for many years.

Surviving is a sister, Eileen Jane Bruno of McMurray.

Marilyn Loretta MtJoy, formerly of Nemacolin, died Monday, February 10, 2014 in Punxsutawney Area Hospital, Punxsutawney, Pa., following a brief illness.

She was born April 30, 1930 in Grindstone, Pa., a daughter of the late Mary Catherine (Bill) and William "Bill" Ralko.

She was a 1948 graduate of Cumberland Township High School. Marilyn lived in Nemacolin until 1994, when she relocated to Punxatawney, Pa. to be closer to her son. She was a homemaker and loving mother.

Surviving are her two sons, Robert MtJoy, Jr. and his wife Sundra and Bruce MtJoy and Wanda Covatch; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and one brother, William Ralko and his wife Patricia of Livonia, Mich.

Deceased in addition to her parents are her sister Arlene "Sugar" Bialko and two brothers, Robert L. Ralko and Edmond Ralko.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests people make donations to the charity of their choice.

Francis A. Nazimek

Served parishes for 60 years

The Rev. Francis Nazimek, 86, of Fredericktown, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

The Rev. Nazimek was born January 6, 1922, in Cardale, Fayette County, a son of Joseph and Magdaline Michno Nazimek.

He graduated from Redstone Township High School and St. Vincent's College and Seminary, and was ordained a priest on June 13, 1948.

The Rev. Nazimek served for 60 years at parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh including St. Mary Czestochowa, McKeesport, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Adalbert and Corpus Christi, all of Pittsburgh, and St. Oliver Plunkett, Fredericktown.

He served the parishes of Our Lady of Consolation in Nemacolin, St. Mary's Crucible and Sacred Heart in Rices Landing and St. Hugh in Carmichaels from 1966 to 1999.

The Rev. Nazimek's extra-parochial assignments were Faithful Friar of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, and chaplain of the John F. Kennedy Council Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters of America and Nemacolin Volunteer Fire Department.

The Rev. Nazimek shared the joys and sorrows of his parishioners for three generations and will be missed.

Surviving are two nephews, John T. Nazimek and wife Regina of Connellsville and the Rev. David J. Nazimek of Monessen; a niece, Madelyn Nemeth of Uniontown; a great-nephew, Jeremy Nazimek of Las Vegas; and a sister-in-law, Leona M. Nazimek of Republic.

Deceased are four brothers, Paul, John, Anthony and Andrew Nazimek, and two sisters, Agatha LeGrande and Antoinette Nazimek.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and until 10:15 a.m., the time of a prayer service, Monday, August 4, in Lesako Funeral Home Inc., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels (724-966-5100). Fr. Francis A. Nazimek is pastor of our Lady of Consolation. Nemacolin. and its missions at St. Mary's, Crucible, and Sacred Heart. Rices Landing Fr. Nazimek. a native of Orient. Pa., was educated at Orient Grade School. Cardale; Redstone High School, Republic: St. Mary's College. Orchard Lake. Mich ; and St. Vincent’s Seminary, Latrobe. Following his ordination in 1948. Fr. Nazimek was named assistant pastor of St. Mary's, McKeesport until 1953. He then served at Assumption Church. Bellevue, from 1953-1958; St. Adalbert. South Side, from 1958-1963; and Corpus Christi, East Liberty, from 1963-1966. In Oct. 1966 he assumed his present pastorate at Our Lady of Consolation. Fr. Nazimek is planning a concelebrated Mass for Sunday, June 10. at 4 p m at his parish. A dinnerreception is also being planned for friends and parishioners in the parish Activities Building following the Mass.

Emilio (Emil) Paci, 91, of Nemacolin, Pa., died at 5:45 A. M. on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at his home after a brief illness. He was born August 23, 1912 in Ascoli-Picceno, Italy, a son of the late Luigi and Josephine Furmani Paci. Mr. Paci was a 1934 graduate of Mapletown High School and resided at Nemacolin since 1940. He retired in 1979 as a foreman for the Buckeye Coal Company at Nemacolin where he had been a member of the mine rescue team. Mr. Paci was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Parish at Nemacolin since 1940 and was a member of U. M. W. A. Nemacolin Local 6290. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing. On June 24, 1936, he married Helen E. Temo, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Thomas E. Paci and his wife, Barbara, of Clarkston, Mich. and Emil L. Paci, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Troy, Mich.; three daughters, Emily H. Hritz and her husband, John, of Bonita Springs, Fla., Patricia A. Paci and her husband, Michael Conrad, of Chesterland, Ohio and Cynthia M. Madich and her husband, Gary, of Westerville, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Thomas Paci, Jr., Christina Paci, John Hritz, Jr., Robert Hritz, Emily Ann Hritz, Renee McDonnell, Johnna Deering, Anna Madich and Joseph Madich; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Dominic Paci and two sisters, Giovana Conti and Adella Minerd.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P. M. on Friday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Helen Temo Paci, 90 of Nemacolin, Pa., died at 10:10 P.M. on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 in her home. She was born December 13, 1919 in Continental, Fayette County, Pa., a daughter of the late Pete and Anna (Gurney) Temo.

Mrs. Paci was a member of the Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Nemacolin since 1940 where she was a member of the Rosary Society. She was a member of the Greene County Court # 1923 of the Catholic Daughters of America and enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family. Mrs. Paci was employed by the Carmichaels Area School District in the cafeteria for several years. She was an excellent cook and provided many meals for holiday and family gatherings. Her home and yard were a tribute to her love of all types of flowers. On June 24, 1936, she married Emilio "Emil" Paci, who died December 31, 2003.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas E. Paci and his wife, Barbara of Clarkston, Mich. and Emil L. Paci and his wife, Sandra of Troy, Mich.; three daughters, Emily H. Hritz and her husband, John of Bonita Springs, Fla., Patricia A. Paci and her husband, Michael Conrad of Chardon, Ohio and Cynthia Madich and her husband, Gary of Westerville, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Thomas Paci, Jr., Christina Paci, John Hritz, Robert Hritz, Emily Ann Hritz, Renee McDonnell, Johnna Deering, Anna Madich and Joseph Madich; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Sophie Zammerilli and Mary Kubasik, both of Clarksville, Pa. and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Josephine Rodriguez and Anna Knepp.

Family and friends are welcome from Noon to 3 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where a blessing service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Monday, June 14, 2010, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church, Nemacolin with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Greene County Memorial Park. A parish vigil service will be held at 8:00 P.M. on Sunday in the funeral home.


John P. Paidakovich

John Paidakovich

John P. Paidakovich (affectionately known to many friends as Pa-dock), age 96, formerly of Nemacolin, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2020 at the Adventist Medical Center in Rockville MD due to COVID related complications. John was born on June 16, 1924 in Barracksville, WV to Joseph and Lucy Paidakovich. He was one of four children – John, Mary, Steve and Matt. They were a devout Roman Catholic family of Croatian descent. John grew up in Nemacolin, PA and was married to Teresa Bizub in Our Lady of Consolation Church.

John and his family resided in Cabin John, MD for over fifty years. John attended the St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Bethesda, MD., was a member of the UMW union and was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a proud board member and frequent visitor of the Citizens Club.

John was a military veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict. He was proud of his military service with the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army. He always wondered why he was drafted twice. That shall remain a mystery. Prior to his military service, John worked as a coal miner at the Nemacolin mine for several years, following in his father Joe’s footsteps. After his military service, John worked for the United States Postal Service for over 20 years.

John was married to Teresa Bizub (Nemacolin PA) for over 60 years. They had two daughters, Mary Ann and Lucy, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. John and Teresa spent much of their retirement years babysitting and attending their grandchildren’s sporting and other events. They loved their family unconditionally.

There will be a private funeral service for John (immediate family only due to COVID) at the Paul M. Lesako Funeral Home Inc., 204 Dowlin Ave., Carmichaels, Pa, 15320, (724)966-5100. Interment will follow at St Mary’s Cemetery in Crucible PA. Military services provided by the Greene county Honor Guard. A celebration of life for John will scheduled in the future for John’s many friends and family.

John’s survivors include his daughter Mary Ann (David), Lucy (Chris), his grandchildren Sarah Gardina, John Seifert (Jhonna), Amy Feldman (Josh) and Elizabeth Shura (Aaron) and his great grandchildren: TJ Gardina, Jenna Seifert, Brooks Seifert and Andie Feldman. John is also survived by his sister Mary Goldner (Paidakovich) of San Antonio TX, brother-in-law Marcellus Fitzwater of Charlottesville VA and sister in law Mary Ann Bizub of Milwaukee WI.. Additionally, John is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. John is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (Steve and Matt), his wife (Teresa) and his grand-daughter Sarah’s husband, Tim Gardina.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in John’s name to the charity of your choice.


Charles E. Plasko Sr.

Charles E. (Pye) Plasko Sr., 78, of Nemacolin, died at 8:58 a.m. Monday, June 17, 1996, in Washington Hospital.

He was born July 26, 1917, in Bessemer, a son of John and Mary Patrick Plasko.

Mr. Plasko was a retired coal miner. He worked in the Nemacolin Mine Preparation Plant.

Mr. Plasko served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. He was a former Democratic committeeman.

In memoriam of Steve Charles Popovich, (1942-2011)

Steve Charles Popovich, 68, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., passed away June 8, 2011, at his residence.

He was born July 6, 1942, in Nemacolin, Pa. He was a resident of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and past resident of Eastlake, Willowick, Willoughby and Willoughby Hills.

Mr. Popovich received many awards including two-time National Promotion Man of the Year 1972-1973 Billboard Magazine, 1st Time Clive Davis Award of Promotion Excellence, six Grammy nominations (winner of two) for label and/or co-producer, and first Polka Grammy Award Winner with Frank Yankovic.

In 1962 he began working in the warehouse at Columbia Records in Cleveland in inventory control, sales and promotion until 1969, when he became an assistant to the director of promotion, Ron Alexenburg.

In 1972 to 1974, he became the youngest vice president of CBS and first vice president of promotions at Columbia Records, and then from 1974 to 1976 he was the vice president of A&R Records. In 1977 he founded and became president of Cleveland International Records, which is most famous for Meatloaf's ""Bat Out of Hell"" album, which has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. He was instrumental in the success of many, including Boston, The Byrds, The Jackson 5, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Cash, Frank Yankovic, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Santana and many more.

He was also known at helping and fighting for the underdog musicians and artists.

He was always a Clevelander at heart and internationally promoted Cleveland and its people with his many connections, including ""Cleveland Rocks."" Steve was a loving, generous and caring man. He was known for his larger than life personality and always put other people first. He was very family orientated and everyone was family to him.

Survivors are his daughter, Pamela Marie Popovich; son, Steve (Brittany) Popovich Jr.; two grandsons, Stephen and Tanner Popovich; sister, Barbara (Dominic) Lemmo; nieces, Dawn (Mark) Bottger, Dina (Scott) Simpson, Danielle (Erik) Petkovic; and nephew, Dominic (Jessica) Lemmo Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Zora (Razum) Popovich. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, at Saint John of The Cross, 140 Richmond Road, Euclid.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 and from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Monreal Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Blvd., Eastlake. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.
